Boole’s Symbolized Laws of Thought Facing Empiricism

چکیده

George Boole (1815–1864) is rightly known as a logician, the author of an algebra logic, even if he did not conceive it quite in same way we know it. The calculus on classes and propositions, that set out to be equivalent, were at core his logic. After more than twenty centuries where logic was associated analysis language, handled for first time with mathematical symbols. However, Boole’s one produced. Concept empiricism and the vehicles of thought

Concept empiricists are committed to the claim that the vehicles of thought are re-activated perceptual representations. Evidence for empiricism comes from a range of neuroscientific studies showing that perceptual regions of the brain are employed during cognitive tasks such as categorization and inference. I examine the extant neuroscientific evidence and argue that it falls short of establis...

The Laws of Boole’s Thought

The algebra of logic developed by Boole was not Boolean algebra. In this article we give a natural framework that allows one to easily reconstruct his algebra and see the difficulties it created for his successors. It is well known that modern Boolean algebra is connected with the work of George Boole [1815–1864], namely with his two books on a mathematical treatment of logic: • The Mathematica...

Aristotle’s Prior Analytics and Boole’s Laws of Thought

Prior Analytics by the Greek philosopher Aristotle (384– 322 BCE) and Laws of Thought by the English mathematicianGeorge Boole (1815 – 1864) are the twomost important surviving original logical works from before the advent of modern logic. This article has a single goal: to compare Aristotle’s system with the system that Boole constructed over twenty-two centuries later intending to extend and ...

On the Algebra in Boole's Laws of Thought

This article explores the ideas that went into George Boole’s development of an algebra for logic in his book The Laws of Thought. The many theories that have been proposed to explain the origins of his algebra have ignored his wife Mary Boole’s claim that he was deeply influenced by Indian logic. This paper investigates this claim and argues that Boole’s focus was more than a framework for pro...

The Poverty of Empiricism

Many researchers – and their advisors on research method – adopt a doctrine called empiricism, which claims that researchers may only use empirical methods. This restrictive doctrine impoverishes any academic discipline where it is dominant. The main reason is that a discipline only qualifies for the status of a science after it has progressed beyond empirical generalisations to explanatory the...
